On September 4, 2019, BMW officially unveiled a special edition of the new 7 Series—the 7 Series Radiant Cadenza Immaculate Edition—at a private preview event during the 2019 Chengdu Auto Show. The vehicle was jointly created by BMW Designworks and the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University, incorporating a wide range of Chinese cultural elements, including embroidery, clair-de-lune blue porcelain, lacquer art, mother-of-pearl inlay, agarwood, and specially formulated China Red exterior paint. Limited to a single unit worldwide, the model is not offered for public sale.

In the new BMW 7 Series Radiant Cadenza Immaculate Edition, the central armrest cover along the vehicle’s axis replaces leather with traditional kesi silk tapestry. The surface of the tapestry is further adorned with highly intricate Suzhou embroidery techniques. From more than 4,000 colored silk threads, four subtly differentiated shades of gray were carefully selected and embroidered using varied stitches to create an understated yet elegant interplay of light and shadow. Through layered rendering, a landscape of mountains and seas emerges, harmonizing with the overall interior color palette and evoking the Eastern aesthetic of “great form without form.”

The overall design embodies the distinctive characteristics of Suzhou embroidery stitches, allowing full expression of embroidery techniques, the flow of silk fibers, and luminous surface effects. While highlighting the artistic qualities of Suzhou embroidery, it also preserves the craft’s traditional refinement, delicacy, and elegant restraint.

The design draws inspiration from Extraordinary Views of the Xiao and Xiang Rivers by Mi Youren. Rendered in expressive ink-wash style, the work evokes a wondrous realm of clouded mountains and shifting mists. Mountains, rivers, and trees are not depicted in detailed realism; instead, it seeks the unique poetic resonance of nature shrouded in vast rain and mist, capturing a moistened richness and a softly veiled, atmospheric beauty.

After evaluating hundreds of fabric options across major categories—including kesi silk tapestry, gauze, plain silk satin, duan silk, and taffeta in a wide range of colors—this traditional kesi fabric was ultimately selected. Aged over twenty years, the material has developed a softened luster and refined, elegant tones. There was precisely enough of this single piece to craft the vehicle’s armrest, and it is no longer possible to find a second identical fabric.

Before the embroidery process began, the Yao team had already carefully planned the specific stitches to be used in every area. Flat stitch, luminous stitch, solid-and-void stitch, scattered interlocking stitch, wrapped stitch, diagonal wrapped stitch, rolling stitch, couching stitch, straight random stitch, joining stitch, filling stitch, raised stitch, gold couching, layered stitch… what appears at first glance to be a restrained composition in fact conceals the application of more than a dozen embroidery techniques.

A defining feature of Fusion Embroidery Style lies in the flexible use of stitches to express the vitality of landscapes. When viewed up close, the embroidered mountains and waters may appear somewhat irregular, yet this very quality allows the imagery to be rendered more effectively. In its technical execution, Fusion Embroidery Style places exceptional emphasis on the selection of silk thread thickness, the directional flow of silk fibers, and the nuanced variation in stitch length. These elements imbue the composition with movement and a sense of air, achieving an effect that is richly dynamic yet harmoniously unified.

The seatbelt fabric, being relatively thick, required double-sided embroidery. Even when using the finest needles, the process was extremely demanding, and flat stitching proved to be the technique best suited to expressing refinement and precision.

The greatest challenge encountered during embroidery was that dense flat stitching caused severe deformation of the seatbelt, while fully filled flat embroidery made it impossible for the seatbelt to retract. Various stitching methods were tested to address this issue, ultimately leading to the adoption of an intersecting stitch technique that balances solid and void.

The rear passengers' footrests are wrapped in red-and-white dual-tone leather, with the red leather surface further embellished with cloud-pattern embroidery.

The BMW 7 Series Radiant Cadenza Immaculate Edition embodies supreme craftsmanship, fusing modern design thinking with traditional Chinese aesthetics.
